Shelf Angle Directly Bolted to Concrete with Brick Ties
  • Mark Hagel

    Updated at: Apr 28, 2025

  • Description

App for the design of a steel shelf angle for masonry veneer anchored to concrete with posted installed anchor bolts. The force method is used to determine reactions and deflection of the indeterminate structure per bolt (using the bolt spacing as Tributary Width) A full moment connection between the mortar joint of the masonry veneer and the shelf angle can be selected which assumes the full stiffness (Em = 10xf'm) of the veneer is applied to the moment connection. This is a reasonable assumption for a mortar joint that is directly bonded to the horizontal leg of the shelf angle or to a flexible flashing (self-adhered membrane) applied to the shelf angle. Alternatively, a more conservative a partial moment connection can be selected that scales down the value of Em (to mimic the effects of a rotational stiffness spring) to 1/20th of Em. The effect of the reduction to Em is a reduction in the tension force in the ties and an increase in the horizontal leg deflection.
