Documentation on how to use "Physics 30 Magnetic Force and LHR (Example 1)" Calculator

This app is used to calculate the magnetic force acting on a moving charge in a magnetic field. Inputs given are as follows:

  1. Magnitude and direction of the magnetic field (T)
  2. Magnitude and direction of the velocity of the object (m/s)
  3. Charge of the object (C)

Using the formula: Fm=qvBFm = q*v*B and the Left-Hand Rule (LHR), a magnetic force is calculated in N.

When entering inputs, make sure units are correct. Scientific notation can also be used using "e" with the form (1.3e7). Keep in mind that this is for a negative charge (i.e. electrons). If the object is positively charged the Right-Hand Rule must be used to find the direction of the force.

An example of a question that this calculator can solve:

An electron is travelling at 3.20e5 m/s (into the page) perpendicular to an external magnetic field of magnitude 101 T (To the right). Determine the magnetic force acting on the electron. (Charge of electron is -1.60e-19 C).
