Shelf Angle Design - Lag Screw to SPF or LVL Rim Board
  • Alberta Masonry Council

    Updated at: Oct 9, 2026

  • Description

Design of a Shelf Angle for masonry veneer fastened to an LVL or SPF Rim Board with Lag Screws. The Force method is used to determine reactions and deflection of the indeterminate structure. A reduction of Em to account for partial moment connection between the veneer and shelf angle is also accounted for which provides a more accurate estimate of deflection of the horizontal leg of the shelf angle at service load. When the brick veneer is mortared directly to the horizontal leg of the shelf angle or mortared to a metal flashing that has been adhered to the horizontal leg of the shelf angle fastened to the with metal nails or sheet metal screws E_Veneer = 1/10th of Em. If the brick veneer is mortared to a loose-laid flashing E_veneer = 1/30th Em. The reduction in Em corresponds to a reduction in load in the ties an increase in deflection of the horizontal leg of the shelf angle. These values for E_veneer have been calibrated with actual deflections from testing at U of Alberta.
